I wonder how many peri and post-menopausal women are informed of the additional risks below ...

Refractive Challenge

Recurrent Regression After Hyperopic LASIK

By Mitchell C. Shultz, MD

Excerpt:
"Through my 6 years’ experience performing refractive surgery, I have found that women in the perimenopausal age group have a significantly increased risk of dry eye syndrome after LASIK when compared to other subgroups of patients. LASIK-induced neurotrophic epitheliopathy (LNE) caused by the transection of the sub-basal nerve fiber bundle and photoablation of the superficial stromal nerves sets the stage for postoperative dry eyes. The combination of LNE and hormonal changes affecting meibomian secretions leads to a chronic tear film dysfunction that is more prevalent in peri- and postmenopausal women. For this reason, I am leery of performing LASIK on these patients."

It's important that you take 5 minutes to comment about your LASIK experience. Thanks!

This article should be moved to the non-peer reviewed section.

Won't LASIK then do the same thing to ALL women once they reach that age? So isn't this also bad for women like myself who have LASIK well before they go through menopause, but will obviously go through menopause one day? Isn't this then bad for ALL women? (Well...LASIK is a bad choice for EVERYONE....men included...but I'm just talking about this ONE specific reason, LOL)

I think I read or heard somewhere that getting pregnant could also have a bad effect with LASIK. Because of the hormones maybe? I forget what the outcome was...regression maybe...or dry eye? I don't remember.
